Wladimir van Wilgenburg is an on-the-ground based reporter and analyst specialized in Kurdish affairs. He graduated from Utrecht University with a MA in Conflict Studies in 2011, and from Exeter University with a MA in Kurdish studies in 2013. He covered several major battles against ISIS in northern Syria, and Iraqi Kurdistan and other subjects for outlets such as Al Monitor, Middle East Eye, Daily Beast, Defense Post, Al Jazeera, and Foreign Policy. Furthermore, he conducted research and analysis for several think tanks such as Carnegie Endowment, Atlantic Council, Jamestown Foundation and The Washington Institute for Near East Policy. He co-authored two books for I.B.Tauris on the Kurds of Syria, one with Dr. Harriet Allsop on the Syrian Kurds’ experiment with self-rule in 2019, and the other with Dr. Michael Knights on the SDF-US partnership against ISIS in 2021.
