ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, on Thursday in a video message he posted on social media congratulated the Kurdish nation on Newroz.

"It's Spring Equinox, and once again, the Kurdish community is gathering together to celebrate Newroz. For centuries, Kurds have gathered on hillsides in Kurdistan and around the world to light bonfires and celebrate the beginning of the new year,” the Conservative Party leader said.

Poilievre also added that “As they faithfully honor these ancient traditions, Kurds around the world are encouraged with a sense of hope. Hope that freedom will prevail oppression. That light will prevail over darkness, and that the cold of winter will always give way to the freshness of spring. On behalf of Canada’s common sense Conservatives Newroz Piroz Be.”

Newroz is the oldest national holiday celebrated by the Kurds worldwide, especially in their homeland. It begins on Mar. 21 and features various traditional celebrations and rituals.

Although Newroz is a national holiday for Kurds, many people in the region, including Iraq, also celebrate the annual occasion.
