Khor Mor attack a systematic targeting of KRG's economy, former Iraqi Foreign Minister

Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - Former Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari confirmed that the attack on the Khor Mor field is “a systematic targeting of the economy of the Kurdistan Region.”

Pointing out that these attacks “confirm once again that the policy of appeasement and concession with the militia forces is of no use,” calling for “unity of rank and position.”

He said in a post on the X platform that the Kurdistan Region is “targeted,” regardless of what he called “the miserable alliances of some.”

Yesterday, Friday, the Khor Mor gas field was subjected to a terrorist attack that resulted in the death of four Yemeni workers and the injury of two others, in addition to causing severe damage to the field.

Ramik Ramazan, the governor of Chamchamal district, told Kurdistan24 on Friday that a drone at around 6:45 pm struck the Khor Mor gas field.

The Kurdistan Regional Government issued a statement regarding the bombing of the Khor Mor gas field, in which it called on the Iraqi government to arrest the perpetrators of the attack and bring them to justice.

Peshawa Hawramani, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) spokesperson, on Friday in a statement condemned the Khor Mor gas field attack and called it “a terrorist act.”

“Good efforts have been made in the past to improve the energy sector and economic infrastructure in Iraq, especially in the Kurdistan Region, and while steps are being taken to resolve the disputed, evil and destructive hands once again targeted the Khor Mor gas field in a terrorist act,” the spokesperson said.

Kurdistan Regional Government spokesman, Peshwa Hawramani, confirmed that the terrorist attack on the Khor Mor field caused a decrease in electricity production by 2,500 megawatts.

He added: The specialized teams in the Ministries of Electricity and Natural Resources are trying to increase gas production as quickly as possible, to restore the necessary electricity to the national grid and to prevent a continuing shortage in the amount of electricity.

In a statement the Kurdistan Region’s President Nechirvan Barzani also condemned the attack and called on the Iraqi government to take legal action against the perpetrators of the attack.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Friday in a post on X condemned the Khor Mor gas field attack and sent his condolences to the four civilians killed.

“I strongly condemn tonight’s terror attack on Khor Mor. My thoughts and condolences are with the four civilians killed, and I wish the wounded a swift recovery. I have instructed the Ministry of Health to provide all necessary support,” Prime Minister Barzani said.

The UN Special Envoy to Iraq has strongly condemned the recent attack on the Khor Mor gas field and has called for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In response to the drone attack on the Khor Mor field in the Qadir Karam sub-district of the Chamchamal district, the United Nations Special Envoy to Iraq (UNAMI) expressed deep sorrow for the loss of life and extended condolences to the families of the victims.

The strike resulted in the killing of four Yemeni workers in the gas field.

The Khor Mor gas field is estimated to contain over 7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves.

Dana Gas operates in the Khor Mor gas field. With their partner Crescent Petroleum, Dana Gas announced in early 2022 that they produced 552 million cubic feet of natural gas daily.

The company plans to increase gas production from the Khor Mor gas field by 55 percent.

Dana Gas is an energy company based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is one of the largest private-sector natural gas companies in the Middle East and North Africa.

In addition to the Khor Mor gas field, there are several other gas fields in the Kurdistan region that are operated by various oil companies. These include the Bina Bawi gas field, operated by Genel Energy, and the Chamchamal gas field, operated by Gulf Keystone Petroleum.

The region is also home to smaller fields such as the Piramagrun gas field, which is operated by the KRG.
