KRG to distribute financial aid to Erbil Qaysari market fire victims

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) will begin distributing financial aid to shopkeepers affected by the devastating fire at Erbil's Qaysari Market on Sunday, September 8th, at 7:00 PM.
Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw announced that the assistance, provided by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, will range from 2 to 20 million dinars, depending on the extent of the damage suffered by each shopkeeper.
This aid follows Prime Minister Barzani's visit to the market on Thursday, where he assessed the ongoing renovation efforts and listened to the concerns of the affected traders. The Prime Minister has instructed the relevant authorities to expedite the repair and restoration process, with the aim of reopening the market as soon as possible.
The fire, which broke out on May 5th, 2024, resulted in significant damage to the market, with 227 shops and seven small warehouses affected.

The spokesperson for the Iraqi Interior Ministry, Brigadier General Miqdad Miri, confirmed that recent fires in the markets of the Kurdistan Region were deliberate acts perpetrated by elements of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The KRG has allocated a budget of 5.3 billion dinars for the market's renovation and has waived 50% of garbage fees, signs, and taxes for 2023, and 100% for 2024, to support the affected traders.
