ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) –  A Mosul resident, Abdulrahman, tells Kurdistan24 the story of his amputation by the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Mosul after being accused of stealing.

“Somebody in our neighborhood made an allegiance with [IS], and they hated me for having a different style and for smoking,” Abdulrahman told Kurdistan24 Correspondent Afsanah Shamohammadi.

The Mosul resident spoke from the Khazir camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) located in southwestern Erbil.

According to Abdulrahman, somebody accused him of stealing IQD 45,000 ($38) during the time IS militants had jailed him for three months.

The insurgents then amputated his arm in the center of a market.

Abdulrahman also had tattoos on his skin which led IS to lash him 100 times on a daily basis, according to the Mosul resident.

“I was a carpenter before. I had a very good life,” Abdulrahman continued.

“I had a girlfriend, and we were about to get married, but after the emergence of IS in Mosul, I lost her as she moved to Europe and also lost my right hand,” he added.

The extremist group occupied Mosul in June 2014 and shortly expanded to other areas in northern Iraq.

However, the group has lost most of the territory since then and continues to shrink as Peshmerga and Iraqi forces launched the Mosul operation on Oct. 17, 2016.

The offensive is ongoing, and the troops have already liberated half of the city.
