ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – A displaced Mosul family in one of the camps for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Kurdistan Region named their newborn baby girl ‘Kurdistan,’ to express their gratitude to the Region that has sheltered them after fleeing Islamic State (IS).

At Hassansham camp for IDPs, western Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region, a family who have fled IS persecution in their home city of Mosul, named their newborn baby 'Kurdistan' and said they would have named it Barzani if the baby was a boy.

"We named our baby girl, Kurdistan. Thank God, Kurdistan Region has embraced us and opened its arms to us,” the mother told Kurdistan24.

She added that doctors were very helpful in Kurdistan Region. "Before our arrival, we were afraid of not being able to find doctors and hospitals to give birth," she added.

"We named her Kurdistan to express our love for the Kurdistan Region," the father told Kurdistan24, and thanked the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for helping and hosting the IDPs and providing their basic needs.

There are nearly 550 newborn babies at the Hassansham camp. Barzani Charity Foundation provides the basic needs for these children.

Nearly 2,500 IDP families currently live at the Hassansham camp.
