Floods in Duhok kill four people, damage dozens of houses

“Civil Defense teams were able to rescue 27 people."

ERBIL, (Kurdistan 24) – Four people were killed in Duhok city after floods caused by heavy rain destroyed homes and disrupted traffic across the province.

Bewar Abdulaziz, the Director of the Duhok Civil Defense, stated on Saturday that due to torrential rainfall in Duhok city and its surrounding areas, four people died and 27 others had to be rescued.

Heavy rain lasted for several hours and damaged at least 50 houses, 27 of which were completely destroyed. Some 30 cars were also washed away, Abdulaziz said.

“The Civil Defense teams were able to rescue 27 people,” the official added.

The Governor of Duhok, Farhad Atrushi, during his visit to some of the flooded areas, told media that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) would do its best to compensate people who were affected by the rain.

The governor explained that while they are already aware that 50 houses have been damaged by the floods, the full extent of the damages are yet to be known as civil defense units, municipalities, the Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC), and other related KRG institutions are assessing the damages.
