ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani on Sunday visited the neighborhoods in Duhok affected by a flood on Saturday night, expressing the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) readiness to compensate the families.

The flood started in the late evening following heavy rainfall. It killed four people while 27 others had to be rescued.

The flood also damaged some 50 houses in several neighborhoods of Duhok Province.

Barzani arrived in the neighborhoods on Sunday afternoon and met with families in the area who were affected by the disaster.

“Of course, we as the government will compensate them [the affected people],” the Prime Minister told reporters in one of the affected neighborhoods. “In this incident, some people have been martyred. We send our condolences to their families.”

“The place where people live now is bad. They need to be transferred,” Prime Minister Barzani said. “God willing, we as the government will do what is necessary to make sure the people will not face such a catastrophe.”

Out of 50 homes, 27 were completely destroyed, according to the Duhok Civil Defense Directorate. Some 30 cars were also washed away, the office said.
