ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – More than 220 Iraqi citizens living in Ukraine have fled to Poland since the beginning of the Russian invasion last Thursday, according to Iraq's foreign ministry.

Figures from Polish authorities and the Iraqi Embassy in Warsaw show that 223 Iraqi citizens have arrived in Poland from Ukraine, Ahmed al-Sahaf, the foreign ministry's spokesperson announced on Tuesday, according to state media Iraqi News Agency.

Al-Sahaf also said that the Iraqi ministry asked Romania, another neighbor of Ukraine, to extend residency permits for Iraqi "citizens who are married to Ukrainian women" and wish to stay in Romania until the security situation improves in Ukraine.

The UN announced Romania received more than 38,000 people from Ukraine as of Monday.

According to United Nations figures from Monday, at least 670,000 people have fled from Ukraine to neighboring countries since the Russian invasion began last Thursday.

Located in the west of Ukraine, Poland has received nearly half of these refugees, according to UN figures.

According to its government, Poland receives an average of 50,000 people fleeing from its war-stricken neighbor each day.

"At this rate, the situation looks set to become Europe's largest refugee crisis this century," the UN refugee agency said.
