Comprehensive compensation for Duhok flood victims

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - In the wake of devastating floods that swept through Duhok city and its surrounding areas, KDP President Masoud Barzani has pledged comprehensive compensation for all affected residents, ensuring swift relief and recovery efforts.

The unexpected wave of rainfall, which persisted until 8 am on Thursday (March 21, 2024), wreaked havoc on communities, leaving many homes damaged and families displaced. Duhok Mayor Millet Saleem, speaking to Kurdistan24, emphasized the severity of the situation and the urgent need for assistance.

“President Barzani, upon learning of the disaster, promptly dispatched Commander Mansour Barzani to assess the damage and provide support. During his visit, Commander Mansour Barzani met with affected individuals and families, promising equitable compensation without discrimination,” he highlighted.

The compensation plan, outlined in three stages, aims to address the diverse needs of the impacted population. In the initial phase, 117 houses built outside the government's master plan and damaged by the floods have already received compensation, with residents relocated to high-quality apartments.

Moving forward, the second phase will focus on mitigating the risk of future flooding in vulnerable areas, while also providing assistance to 17 individuals who lost their homes or essential belongings.

The third phase will extend compensation to residents in surrounding areas affected by the floods, reaffirming the commitments to leaving no victim overlooked.

The catastrophic rains, which struck on Tuesday morning (March 19, 2024), primarily targeted the provinces of Duhok and Zakho within the Kurdistan Region. Floodwaters inundated neighborhoods, breaching homes and disrupting transportation routes, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated relief efforts.

In response to the crisis, President Massoud Barzani has announced plans to allocate housing units to affected citizens, providing them with a semblance of stability and security amid the chaos.
