Qatar to import from Kurdistan to battle embargo

Kurdistan's agricultural products have increased despite the lack of funding to the sector.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Qatar is to invest in Kurdistan Region’s agriculture sector and import agricultural products since the country suffers food shortage due to the embargo from the Gulf states.

A Qatari delegation headed by Deputy Head of Qatar Chamber of Commerce visited the Kurdistan Region and held meetings with the local officials in Kirkuk and Sulaimani governorates to discuss mechanisms to improve economic relations.

In a meeting with the Kirkuk Governor, the Qatari delegation expressed their readiness to invest in the governorate’s agriculture sector, a statement from the governor office said on Tuesday.

According to a Kurdistan 24 reporter, the Qatari delegation also visited Sulaimani to further discuss importing produce from the Region to neutralize the effect of Gulf countries sanction.

Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, Abdulstar Majid, stated that local agricultural products have increased despite the lack of funding to the agriculture sector.

The increase in agricultural products in the Kurdistan Region has become a turning point for the trade relations between the Region and the neighboring countries.

Earlier this month, Majid said that the production of potato has exceeded the local demand, allowing Kurdistan Region to export 500 tons to Russia this year.

It is the harvesting season for many agricultural products in the Kurdistan Region.
