PM Barzani, top Coalition officer reiterate ‘continued’ training for Peshmerga forces

Continued training and support for the Peshmerga forces were underlined in a meeting on Monday between the Kurdistan Region’s prime minister and a top official from the Global Coalition against the so-called Islamic State.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Continued training and support for the Peshmerga forces were underlined in a meeting on Monday between the Kurdistan Region’s prime minister and a top official from the Global Coalition against the so-called Islamic State, according to a statement.

The remarks came during a meeting on Monday as the Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, received a delegation headed by Major General Kevin M. Copsey, the British Deputy Commander-Stability of the CJTF-OIR, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office.

The latest developments in Iraq and the region were discussed as well as the importance of developing relations between the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces and Coalition forces, the statement noted.

The Coalition is an active partner of the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces, which played a vital role in defeating the terror group.

Although the terror group was territorially defeated in 2017, Islamic State remnants are still a threat in the territories disputed between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government, namely Kirkuk and Diyala province.

Prime Minister Barzani and General Copsey “reiterated” training and support for Peshmerga forces in the fight against the Islamic State and other terrorist groups, the statement noted.

They also stressed on “protecting the stability of the Kurdistan Region,” the statement read.

In mid-September, the head of the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga Ministry announced that the United States had committed almost $250 million in security assistance to the ministry that includes vehicles, communications equipment, and training.
