PHOTOS: Peshmerga kill three IS suicide bombers in northeastern Tal Afar

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Peshmerga forces on Tuesday night repelled an Islamic State (IS) attack in the northeast of Tal Afar town, killing three suicide bombers, a Peshmerga Commander said.

The attack took place in the village of Gul Mohammed, west of the Kaske area which is located in the northeast of Tal Afar, Peshmerga Commander Sabah Ibrahim told Kurdistan 24 on Wednesday.

He mentioned Peshmerga forces had killed two of the suicide bombers while the other one detonated his explosives.

The bodies of the deceased extremists remain on the ground.

“Two Peshmerga soldiers experienced light injuries,” Ibrahim said. “Their health condition is stable.”

The attack comes three days after Iraqi forces announced the military operation to liberate Tal Afar from IS.

The militants occupied the town in mid-2014. Three years later, the extremist group’s presence continues to diminish in the country.

Tal Afar is the last stronghold in Nineveh Province under IS control.
