ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani announced that he had proposed an initiative to resolve Iraq's political deadlock on Monday.

KDP President Barzani has suggested that Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammad al-Halbousi meet with the head of Sadrist Movement Muqtada al-Sadr to consult on the ongoing political process and remove obstacles.

The proposal intends to resolve the existing issues and provide "a suitable and good atmosphere" for Iraq's political process, read the statement from the KDP leader.

"I hope this initiative will have good results in the interest of Iraq and its components," Barzani said in the statement.

Barzani's initiative comes as disagreements between Iraqi political parties have deadlocked the new government's formation following the Oct. 10, 2021, parliamentary election. Sadr's bloc was the biggest winner in that election, with 73 seats.

Sadr calls for a "national majority government." The Shiite Coordination Framework, consisting of mainly the pro-Iran Shiite factions whose parliamentary seats were reduced by half in the election, rejects this proposal and calls for another consensus government, the traditional form of government in post-2003 Iraq.
