ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Arab League is set to meet on Monday to discuss Russia’s ongoing military assault against Ukraine.

Organized at Egypt’s request, the session will be attended by the foreign ministers of member states, Hosam Zaki, the deputy head of the League, told AFP.

Since Russia launched its combined air, land, and sea assault on the eastern European country, many Arab Gulf nations have remained relatively silent on the invasion, given their considerable ties with Moscow.

In a United Nations Security Council meeting on Friday, organized to condemn the Russian invasion, the United Arab Emirates abstained from voting.

Syria is heavily dependent on Russian military support. Moscow’s 2015 intervention in the Syrian conflict, which began in 2011, was decisive for enabling President Bashar al-Assad to retain his grip on power and defeat the armed uprising against his regime.

AFP also pointed out that a number of the Arab countries are also reliant on both warring countries for their wheat supplies. Interruptions in these supplies could affect food security and ignite a new wave of instability in the volatile region.

The Ukrainian Health Ministry estimates that Russian attacks on the European country have killed at least 198 Ukrainians, including three children.
