ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - This morning, March 25, 2024, marked a significant event in Garmian province as all four dams in the region overflowed, signaling a blessing for agriculture and tourism sectors.

Among them, the Bawa Shaswar dam in Kifri experienced its second overflow of the year, showcasing its impressive capacity to absorb six million cubic meters of water.

Jabar Mahmood, the director of Garmian dams, shared insights with Kurdistan24 and highlighted the transformative effect of the overflowing dams.

“The flowing waters are expected to rejuvenate agricultural lands and provide a welcomed improvement to the growing tourism industry, while at the same time replenishing groundwater reservoirs,” Mahmoud explained.

The Bawa Shaswar dam, with dimensions measuring 40 meters in height and an expansive 114 meters in width, has overflown. Its complement, the Awa Spi dam, with a height of 90 centimeters, has also overflown.

Further details emerged as Mahmood disclosed the rising water levels in other key dams. The water in the Hassan Kanosh Dam in Sangao township witnessed a rise of 30 centimeters, while the Turajar Dam in Sheikh Tawel township risen by a remarkable 60 centimeters.

These are vital water reservoirs that greatly depend on rainfall and contributions from regional streams and rivers to sustain their operations.

Fortunately, recent weather forecasts indicate a continuation of the rainy conditions, with over 21 mm of precipitation recorded in the past 24 hours. In total, Garmian has experienced an impressive accumulation of approximately 250 mm of rainfall.

As the region continues to bask in the aftermath of this natural phenomenon, hopes are high for a bountiful harvest season and an influx of tourists eager to witness the picturesque landscapes in the Kurdistan Region, nurtured by the overflowing dams of Garmian province.
