Ankawa district, Erbil initiates sisterhood process with Sterling Heights, Michigan

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The mayor of Ankawa has announced the commencement of procedures to establish a sister-city relationship with Sterling Heights, Michigan, following a meeting with the city's mayor.

Rami Nuri, mayor of Ankawa district, revealed to Kurdistan24 on Saturday that discussions were held with the mayor of Sterling Heights, Michigan, alongside Chaldean investors based in the city.

Mayor Nuri elucidated that the primary objective of these deliberations is to initiate the process of formalizing a sister-city bond between Ankawa and Sterling Heights.

Ankawa district, renowned as the epicenter of the Chaldean community, serves as the focal point for Chaldean residents.

The meetings were attended by representatives from the Kurdistan Regional Government, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and the Chaldean Diaspora in the United States, underscoring the collaborative efforts involved in fostering cross-cultural relationships.

Situated northwest of Erbil city center, Ankawa district boasts a predominantly Chaldean and Assyrian population, with strong affiliations to the Chaldean Catholic Church.

Over the past decade, Ankawa has experienced significant growth in the realms of education and technology, attracting tourists from across Iraq to explore its vibrant cultural landscape. This initiative to establish ties with Sterling Heights marks a significant step towards enhancing cultural exchange and cooperation between the two cities.
