TORONTO, Canada (Kurdistan24) – Matchday one of the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League begins on Tuesday with eight matches set to be played including Spanish giants Barcelona in action.

The La Liga winners are at home to Scottish side Celtic who snatched a shock victory in the 2012-13 season when they defeated Barcelona 2-1.

Celtic will be dreaming of a similar outcome, but Barcelona looks strong with their big stars all available.

Strikers Luis Suarez, Neymar, and Lionel Messi are eager to find form ahead of the new season and will expect a victory tonight.

Elsewhere, the match between England’s Manchester City and German club Borussia Mӧnchengladbach at the Etihad Stadium was postponed due to severe thunderstorms.

Former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola was signed by Man City in the summer to bring Champions League glory to the club.

As such, the English-side will be aiming to collect all three points over their opponents when their match is replayed.

Arsenal’s tough test away in France to play Paris Saint-Germain and Spain’s Atletico Madrid travelling to Holland to face PSV Eindhoven are two other notable matches.

German champions Bayern Munich are also in action tonight against significantly weaker opponent Rostov from Russia.

This year’s final will be played in Wales at the Millennium Stadium where the national team plays on June 3, 2017.

Defending champions Real Madrid host Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon where striker Cristiano Ronaldo began his career.

The Portuguese star will be humbly gunning for victory as he looks fully fit after his success with Portugal during the UEFA European Cup in the summer.
