Turkey bombs Mengh military airport

"Bombardment started at about 6 pm on our positions in the village of Mengh, on our military airbase," Tarek Abu Zeid told K24.

MENGH, Syria (K24) - Turkish army has shelled Mengh Airport and Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) targets near the city of Azaz in northwest Syria, Kurdish sources on the ground told K24.
Tarek Abu Zeid, the spokesperson of Army of Revolutionaries, Jaysh al-Thuwar in Arabic, told K24, "Bombardment started at about 6 pm on our positions in the village of Mengh, on our military airbase."
"The Turkish shelling of Kurdish positions has continued for more than two hours almost uninterruptedly," Abu Zeid said, adding that the Turkish forces were using mortars and missiles and firing from the Turkish border.
Army of Revolutionaries said in a statement on Saturday, "This act [shelling Mengh Airport and Azaz] proves that Turkey supports the terrorist organizations, including IS, al-Nusra and Ahrar ash-Sham."
"Shelling the Syrian villages by the Turkish artillery is an assault on the Syrian sovereignty and an illegal military intervention against the forces that fight for a free democratic Syria," the statement read.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights which monitors Syrian war said the shelling targeted the air base and a village captured from insurgents by the PYD-backed YPG forces.
The shelling came amid growing anger in Ankara because of US backing PYD in its fight against the Islamic State (IS) militants.
Turkey's disquiet has been heightened by the tens of thousands of people fleeing across the Turkish border after attacks by Russian-backed Syrian government forces, swelling refugee numbers in the area to 100,000.
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and their allies including Army of Revolutionaries, a coalition force allied with the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), have been combating the Islamic State (IS) under the umbrella of SDF.
On Wednesday, the SDF liberated Mengh Airport from al-Nusra Front, an affiliate of al-Qaeda.
