Michael Jackson's 'They Don’t Care About Us' adapted to Kurdish

Istanbul-based Kurdish music group Bajar and daf ensemble Defjen performed Jackson's 1995 hit.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) - Bajar, an Istanbul-based Kurdish music group, adapted the late King of Pop Michael Jackson's 1996 hit single "They Don't Care About Us" to Kurdish and released a recently-shot music clip of their performance.

With its focus on mingling traditional and modern genres as well as instruments, Bajar collaborated with 'Defjen,' an all daf-playing ensemble, in creating the rework of the protest song in the Kurdish Kurmanji dialect.

Daf is a Middle Eastern frame drum broadly used in traditional Kurdish music along with songs and classical poetry.

Defjen and Bajar performed the song at Istanbul's posh Kadikoy Sahne scene.

In its adaptation, Bajar led by the Ankara-born vocalist Vedat Yildirim simply translated Jackson's English lyrics into Kurdish.
