Senior Kurdistan Region officials on Thursday congratulated Mustafa al-Kadhimi after the Iraqi Parliament gave its vote of confidence to confirm him as the nation’s new prime minister.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Senior Kurdistan Region officials on Thursday congratulated Mustafa al-Kadhimi after the Iraqi Parliament gave its vote of confidence to confirm him as the nation’s new prime minister.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani spoke to Kadhimi over the phone following his appointment as Iraqi PM.

“I spoke to Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi to congratulate him on his appointment at a crucial time for both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” the Kurdish leader wrote on Twitter.

“We face shared challenges; I look forward to working closely with him and his cabinet,” Prime Minister Barzani added.

Elsewhere, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani wrote on Twitter: “I congratulate Mr. Mustafa Al-Kadhimi on his election as the new Prime Minister of Iraq and wish him the best.”

President Barzani wished Kadhimi success in tackling the issues Iraq is facing, adding, “I hope his government succeeds in providing security, stability, and services for Iraqis and reinstates the constitutional rights of the Kurdistan Region.”

Masoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), also congratulated Kadhimi on the successful vote, saying he wished the new premiere would “enhance relations with the Kurdistan Region and resolve outstanding obstacles,” as well as “restore security and stability to the country.”

Kadhimi takes on the role as interim prime minister amid a series of ongoing domestic, regional, and international crises that are plaguing the country. In his speech to lawmakers, he noted the “difficult times” Iraq is now in.

The new prime minister has detailed his cabinet’s agenda with eight points in a four-page document with the purported aim of limiting the scope of his transitional government, among the top priorities of which is to facilitate early elections, a key demand of anti-government protests.
