Erbil security arrests group who stole vehicles, gold, money, cell phones

Erbil Asayish (Security) on Tuesday announced the arrest of five people who were responsible for at least 20 robbery cases in the capital of the autonomous Kurdistan Region.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Erbil Asayish (Security) on Tuesday announced the arrest of five people who were responsible for at least 20 robbery cases in the capital of the autonomous Kurdistan Region.

The group had reportedly stolen 6.8 kilograms of gold, seven vehicles, USD 9,400, 41 cell phones, three motorbikes, along with other things in different parts of Erbil, according to the security’s statement.

“The group carried out some crimes in the name of Asayish, but after they were arrested, it was revealed that they had nothing to do with Asayish,” the statement read.

It also mentioned that they had confessed to their crimes before an investigative judge according to article 443 of the Iraqi Penal Code. A further investigation is underway.

“After stealing vehicles in Erbil, we sold them in Sulaimani’s Chamchamal city,” one of them told Kurdistan 24.

“In total, I received $1,200 after stealing and selling five vehicles in the black market,” another member of the group said.

Local security and police forces in Erbil regularly arrest different groups and individuals in the city for their alleged involvement in various robbery cases.
