Iraqi Kurdistan: When a First Visit Changes the Entire Picture

A Saudi Perspective from Erbil Reveals Investment and Tourism Opportunities Worth Global Attention

I hesitated for quite some time before deciding to visit the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, as it was my first visit to Iraq altogether. Like many people, I carried with me a preconceived image of what I expected to find — a region somewhat distant from the pace of development and urban transformation taking place across many cities around the world, whether in infrastructure, tourism services, or investment opportunities.

But the moment I arrived at Erbil International Airport, those assumptions began to disappear.

I found a modern and well-organized airport that reflected the level of development taking place across the city, from efficient procedures and smooth operations to the warmth of the welcome.

Outside the airport, my impression only grew stronger. I was struck by the smooth flow of traffic, the noticeable urban development, and the high-rise buildings constructed within a coherent urban landscape. It gave me the impression that those who planned Erbil’s development had been looking ahead and anticipating the city’s future well in advance — presenting a very different picture from the one many may have formed from afar.

The progress of any city is ultimately measured by the strength of its infrastructure. What I witnessed in Erbil, combined with what I learned through my meetings, made it clear to me that Kurdistan is not simply building on what it has already achieved; it is moving forward with ambition, seeking to strengthen its position among the region’s leading cities.

Another important factor is security and stability — the cornerstone for both visitors and investors.

A visitor to Kurdistan can experience a high level of safety and stability, alongside a welcoming and hospitable society. This is an important advantage that can sometimes be difficult to find even in some major capitals around the world, making the region an increasingly attractive destination for tourism and investment.

From an economic perspective, the Kurdistan Region remains a land of promising investment opportunities, particularly as it continues to develop its infrastructure, services, tourism sector, and broader business environment.

What further strengthens its appeal is the support and facilitation provided by the Kurdistan Regional Government through its investment authorities, as well as its willingness to open doors and facilitate the path for Arab and international investors.

Tourism is perhaps one of the sectors with the greatest potential.

The region offers stunning natural landscapes, waterfalls, springs, mountains, and a climate that gives it a distinctive competitive advantage. Its geographical position also makes it a potential destination for international travellers seeking nature, safety, cultural experiences, and something different from the traditional tourist destinations.

The opportunity, however, goes beyond tourism within Kurdistan itself.

Kurdistan’s geographical position creates an opportunity to develop integrated tourism programmes for international visitors — combining visits to the historical and religious landmarks of central and southern Iraq with time spent relaxing and enjoying the natural beauty of Kurdistan.

Of course, transforming these opportunities into successful and sustainable projects requires careful market assessment, a thorough understanding of the investment environment, and strong local partnerships capable of creating long-term value.

Yet what I saw and experienced during this visit strengthened my belief that the region possesses genuine fundamentals that deserve serious attention from investors around the world.

For me, as a Saudi citizen, this visit provided an opportunity to discover first-hand a number of investment and tourism opportunities that deserve greater attention from international investors and travellers.

It also gave me the opportunity to meet with a number of officials within the Kurdistan Regional Government. I was impressed by their genuine willingness to engage, their openness, and their sincere welcome. These encounters further strengthened my conviction that there are real opportunities worthy of serious consideration and that the door is open for exploring high-quality investments across a number of vital and promising sectors.

Perhaps the most important lesson I took away from this visit is that perceptions can change dramatically when we experience a place for ourselves.

Sometimes, the distance between perception and reality is simply the distance between what we have heard and what we have actually seen.

I arrived in Kurdistan with one image in mind and left with a very different one — an image of a region developing with ambition, embracing opportunity, and looking towards the future.

Iraqi Kurdistan today offers an inspiring experience and is opening its doors to the future.

It is, in my view, an experience that deserves to be seen, explored, understood — and, ultimately, shared in by those who believe in the potential of the region and its people.
