COVID-19: Kurdistan Region registers over 790 new cases, 30 deaths

The Kurdistan Region’s Health Ministry announced over 790 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours along with 30 deaths.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region’s Health Ministry announced over 790 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours along with 30 deaths.

The ministry’s daily statement said it had conducted 5,443 tests during the past 24 hours, raising the total of such tests to 497,498 since the outbreak began in the Kurdistan Region in early March.

According to the health ministry, the total number of infections in the Kurdistan Region reached 51,870, including 32,746 recoveries, and 1,877 deaths.

Health officials say 32,746 coronavirus patients have recovered, but it is important to note that a patient classified as a “recovery” means they are no longer being actively treated by health professionals, not that they have fully recovered. Increasingly, medical experts recognize that COVID-19 symptoms, some of them serious, often continue long after an individual’s formal recovery and that various other symptoms could be permanent.

KRG’s efforts in combating COVID-19

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday addressed the Kurdistan Parliament on his cabinet’s efforts in combating the coronavirus pandemic, along with a variety of other subjects.

“The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) allocated 28 billion IQD (Iraqi Dinars) to confront the coronavirus,” Barzani said, while he mentioned the KRG’s precautionary measures that were put in place in early March to curb the spread of the virus.

The government’s efforts in containing the pandemic drew praise from the World Health Organization (WHO), Prime Minister Barzani said as he addressed the parliament.
