ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday extended his congratulations to the newly elected head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS).

In a phone call with the religious scholar, Prime Minister Barzani congratulated Ali Qaradghi for being elected as the union’s leader after its former chief Yousif Qaradhawi died in 2022.

Barzani wished Qaradaghi success in his new assignment for the sake of serving Islam and defending the rights of the oppressed nations, including the Kurdish people, according to a statement released by the premier’s office.

The scholar, in turn, extended his appreciation for Barzani’s call and congratulatory statement.

In its sixth congress held in the Qatari capital Doha on Monday, the Union elected the Kurdish scholar as the new chief by securing 91 percent of the votes.

The Union, established in 2004, aims to “work to convey the message of Islam and guide Muslims to properly understand the provisions of their religion.”

It also issues Fatwa, an Islamic ruling, on critical matters for the Sunni followers of Islam.
