Iraqi Sunni MP accusing Federal Police of plotting assassination attempt against him

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – An Iraqi Sunni parliament member survives a “kidnaping and assassination” attempt by the Iraqi Federal Police in Baghdad.

The Iraqi Parliament member from the Iraqi Forces Coalition faction, Kamil Nawaf al-Ghariri, in a statement on Saturday accused the Iraqi Federal Police of attempting his assassination.

“A security check-point in al-Saidiya area southern Baghdad opened fire at my convoy for a half hour and arrested two of my personal guards,” the Iraqi MP said.

The MP from the biggest Sunni bloc in the Iraqi Parliament added that one of his guards was taken to a Police station and was tortured for the whole day and one of his eyes gouged.

“Then we were informed that the guard was taken to hospital to receive medical treatment without informing us why the attackers did that to him,” al-Ghariri stated.

The MP asked the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to investigate the incident, accusing the federal police of attempting to kidnap and assassinate him.
