KDP President discusses Iraqi government formation with Sunni leaders

Barzani and the Iraqi Sunni delegations discussed the political process and post-election developments in Iraq.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on Thursday met with two separate Iraqi Sunni delegations in Erbil to discuss the political process and post-election developments in Iraq.

Former Kurdistan Region President and President of the KDP Masoud Barzani received a delegation from the Iraqi National Forces Alliance headed by Jamal al-Karbuli, a statement from Barzani’s office said.

“Head of the Iraqi National Forces Alliance thanked the people of the Kurdistan Region and President Barzani for hosting and sheltering thousands of displaced Arabs in the past years and praised President Barzani’s role in the matter,” the statement read.

Barzani and Karbuli also discussed developments in the Iraqi political process and post-parliamentary elections stage, it added.

The meeting shed light on the efforts required to form the new Iraqi government and emphasized the principles of partnership and consensus in the country’s next political process, the statement concluded.

In a separate meeting, Barzani received Osama al-Nujaifi, Vice-President of Iraq and Head of the Qarar Coalition, and an accompanying delegation in the town of Salahuddin in Erbil.

According to the statement, political equations of the post-parliamentary elections and possibilities of a new government formation were discussed in the meeting as well as an assessment of the latest developments and stance of the winning parties over Iraq’s future.
