ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Three people died, and others were injured Monday as a result of a traffic accident on the main road connecting the cities of Erbil and Kirkuk.
The spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic in Erbil, Fadel Haji Hussein, said the accident occurred on the Erbil-Koya road which leads to Kirkuk Province.

“At 12:00 p.m., a truck hit a jeep, killing three people and injuring three others,” Hussein added.
The spokesperson called on drivers to adhere to speed limits, especially since many roads in the area are in poor condition, such as the Erbil-Koya road.

In May, three women were killed and a child severely injured after a teenage driver lost control of his father’s car which police said he was driving without a license in Soran, a city in the Kurdistan Region’s capital of Erbil.
The victims killed in the accident were a woman and her two daughters while her granddaughter received care at an Emergency Room at an Erbil hospital.
Six hundred and eighty-nine people were killed in vehicle-related incidents in the Kurdistan Region in 2017, and 249 more injured, according to figures released by the traffic directorate in January.
The year before, 817 people were killed and another 1,188 wounded.
A total of 1,498,155 traffic violations were logged for 2017, and 4,410 car accidents. Reckless driving is considered to be the primary security risk in the region.
While drivers complain about the quality of roads, traffic police say that speeding remains the leading cause of accidents.
