German football player proposes to Kurdish girlfriend on TV
“I love you, would you like to marry me,” was written in Kurdish on Max Kruse's undershirt during the live broadcast.
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – German football player Max Bennet Kruse, 33, proposed to his Kurdish girlfriend on live TV after Germany’s 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia in the Tokyo Olympics.
Kruse is a German professional footballer who plays forward for the Bundesliga club Union Berlin and the Germany national team.
He took off his jersey during the broadcast, revealing a Kurdish text on his undershirt that said: “I love you, would you like to marry me.”
“This is not the German language; you will not understand [it],” Kruse told the reporter.
“It has been a few months we have been together this last year, and it was a beautiful time. I am not with you now (Dilara), but, as obligated, I am taking out this ring, and I hope you can read this,” he said, pointing at his shirt with the Kurdish text.
“I love you and hope you will be my wife... Lovely greetings to Germany.”
His girlfriend Dilara Mardine reportedly said “Erê,” which means yes in Kurdish.
