Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker visits Institute of Oriental studies in Moscow

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami visited the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Oriental Studies and met with the Kurdish section’s President Dr. Alikber Alikberov.

“Deputy Speaker Hawrami, Dr. Alikberov and the Institute’s consultants discussed the security and political situation in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the wider area, the danger of the resurgence of ISIS, and the historic relationship between the Kurdistan Region and the people and Government of Russia,” the Kurdistan Parliament website said in a press release.
In addition to emphasizing the need for strengthening relations in all sectors, Dr. Hemin Hawrami said that an agreement between the Kurdistan Parliament and the Institute of Oriental Studies would increase an exchange of knowledge and research.
The Deputy Speaker also gave an overview of the Kurdistan Parliament’s system.
The Deputy Speaker also visited the Institute of Oriental Studies’ Kurdish section, which presents its research on Kurdistan monthly and annually. Dr. Hawrami thanked them and reaffirmed Kurdistan Parliament’s support for the Institute’s work.
Russia has traditionally had strong orientalist expertise on Kurds, in no small part thanks to the Russian orientalist Vladimir Minorsky (1877-1966).

The Russian oil company Gazprom Neft has also published an electronic version of “The Kurds: Legends of the East” in 2021.
The company said that this is the world’s first fully-fledged encyclopedia dedicated to the history and culture of the Kurds.
Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Hawrami arrived in Moscow on Feb. 21 at the official invitation of the Valdai Discussion Club for its Middle East conference.

On Feb. 24, Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Hawrami also met with Russia's Special Representative for the Middle East Mikhail Bogdanov and discussed the historic relationship between Kurdistan Region and Russia.
