ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani received Rayan al-Kildani, the head of Babylon Movement, and his accompanying delegation in the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil on Sunday.

Barzani and al-Kildani discussed the latest political developments in Iraq, according to a statement from the KDP president’s office.

In the meeting, they reiterated the “importance of protecting the constitutional rights of Iraq’s components” and fostering bilateral ties, the statement added.

The Babylon Movement delegation expressed its “appreciation” to the Kurdistan Region for its role in supporting ethnic and religious components.

In Iraq’s Oct. 10, 2021, elections, the movement secured four of the five quota seats reserved for the country’s Christians in the 329-seat parliament.

The KDP secured 32 seats, winning the most seats of any single political party in the whole country.

Four months after the elections, Iraq’s political parties are still at odds over forming a new government. The KDP and its allies call for a majority government while their rivals favor maintaining a consensus-based government, the kind that has been predominant in Iraq since 2005.
