KDP President Masoud Barzani marks 36th anniversary of Badinan Anfal, demands justice for Kurdish nation
“These inhuman crimes aimed to exterminate the Kurdish nation,” President Barzani stated. “But they could not break our spirit or extinguish our yearning for freedom.”
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – On Sunday and in a solemn address commemorating the 36th anniversary of the Anfal genocide in Badinan, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani reiterated the Kurdish nation's unwavering demand for justice and recognition of their suffering.
President Barzani recalled the horrific events of August 25 to September 6, 1988, when the Iraqi regime unleashed a brutal campaign of chemical attacks, arrests, killings, deportations, and forced disappearances in the Badinan region.
This final phase of the Anfal genocide left thousands of Kurdish citizens martyred or missing, and hundreds of villages were razed to the ground, displacing tens of thousands of people.
“These inhuman crimes aimed to exterminate the Kurdish nation,” President Barzani stated. “But they could not break our spirit or extinguish our yearning for freedom.”
On this poignant anniversary, the President paid tribute to the martyrs of the Anfal and all those who sacrificed their lives for Kurdistan.
He called upon the Iraqi state to acknowledge its responsibility and compensate the victims and their families for the genocide, crimes, and oppression committed against the Kurdish nation.
"We strongly insist on the legitimate rights of our people," President Barzani declared. "These crimes must not be forgotten."
His message serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of the Anfal genocide and the ongoing struggle for justice and recognition for the Kurdish people.
