ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Five hikers missing in the snow-covered heights of Dargameshi in Oshnavieh, West Azerbaijan province (Rojhilat), were rescued by emergency teams after being trapped overnight, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

Hamid Mahboubi, Chief Manager of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) in West Azerbaijan Province, announced on Friday that the hikers were stranded in the mountains on Thursday evening due to inadequate equipment and supplies. “The hikers suffered from exposure to the cold and were rushed to the general hospital for treatment,” Mahboubi stated.

Initial rescue efforts were launched when Fakhruddin Mam Ali, head of the Oshnavieh Red Crescent Society, reported four residents missing in the heights of Kelashin. Multiple rescue teams were dispatched, as snow and freezing temperatures threatened the hikers' lives.

This first significant snowfall of the year has blanketed several areas in Rojhilat, with snow depths reaching 40 centimeters in Oshnavieh. The incident serves as a reminder of last winter’s tragedy, when three hikers lost their lives in an avalanche in the mountains of Oshnavieh. Their bodies were recovered after a six-day search.
