New speaker for Iraqi parliament will be elected today
After the cancellation of al-Halbousi’s membership in the Iraqi parliament, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, Acting Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, has been occupying the post as an acting speaker until a new speaker is elected.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Mahmoud al-Mashhadani and Salim al-Issawi are candidates for the speaker, although none of them are supported by Sunnis sect.
However, it is said the meeting is not expected to pass over easily, while Mahmoud Mashhadani is supported by Mohammed al-Halbousi and Nuri al-Maliki.
Muthanna al-Samarrai, the Leader of the Azm Alliance, and Iraqi MP at the Council of Representative stated "Shiites parties are involved in weakening the Sunnis, so as the position falls into Shiites hands themselves,”
On November 14th, 2023, the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court ordered to cancel Mohammed al-Halbousi membership of Speaker.

Sunnis have held several meetings to fill the post of speaker of the Iraqi parliament but have not reached an agreement to appoint a replacement for al-Halbousi.
According to Iraqi media reports, "Mohammed al-Halbousi has been removed from his post on charges of corruption and fraud.
Mohammed al-Halbousi, was the Iraqi parliament speaker since 2018, he was also the leader of the Taqadum party.
Earlier, on August 29th, 2017, the Anbar provincial council elected al-Halbousi as a governor.
