President of Kurdistan Region congratulates Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani warmly congratulated Iraqi Mahmoud al-Mashhadani for being elected as the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, on Friday. 

It is understood that HE President Barzani directed his message to the newly elected speaker, and encouraged the government to take up the election step to contribute in strengthening national solidarity.

In a message, in Arabic and Kurdish, posted through X platform, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani stated: 

“I extend my sincere congratulations to my dear brother Dr. Mahmoud al-Mashhadani regarding being elected as the Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives.

Wishing him all the success and guidance, we are confident that electing him represents a positive step towards a new phase of cooperation and joint work between the political forces to manage the country's affairs politically, administratively and legislatively.

We hope that this election to be able to contribute to the national solidarity strengthening. Also to encourage everyone to make every possible effort to serve the nation and its communities.

We look forward for the Council of Representatives to continue its legislative role more effectively, to enhance the rule of the legislation, apply the rule of the laws that serve people’s ambitions, support the stability and future of the country” 

-Biography of the newly appointed Speaker for the Iraqi Parliament-  

Mahmoud Dawood al-Mashhadani was born in 1948, in Baghdad, he completed his primary, secondary and high school education in Kadhimiya district in Baghdad.

Then, in 1972, he graduated from the College of Medicine in Baghdad University.

He was imprisoned in 1981 for his political view by Baath regime government. In 2000, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

In 2004, he was one of the foundation members of the National Dialogue Council.

In 2004, he became a member of the constitution drafting committee, in 2006, he was elected a speaker for the Iraqi parliament.

In 2021, he was elected as an MP at the council of Representative at the Iraqi parliament.

On October 31st, 2024, he was re-elected as the new speaker of the Iraqi parliament.
