PM Barzani, British Ambassador discuss swift formation of new KRG cabinet

During the meeting, Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the importance of swiftly establishing a unified and effective government, reflecting the recent election results and the popular vote of the political parties in the Kurdistan Region.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and British Ambassador to Iraq Stephen Hitchen met Wednesday to discuss the urgent need to form a new cabinet for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and address regional challenges amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the importance of swiftly establishing a unified and effective government, reflecting the recent election results and the popular vote of the political parties in the Kurdistan Region. “We have no veto over the participation of any party and seek a comprehensive, strong, and united government,” Barzani affirmed.

Ambassador Hitchen commended the Kurdistan Region for the peaceful conduct of the recent sixth session of the Kurdistan Region Parliament elections, congratulating Barzani on the success of the electoral process and highlighting its positive implications for stability and democracy in the region. The British envoy praised the calm and orderly atmosphere in which the elections took place, reaffirming the UK’s support for the Kurdistan Region’s democratic and governance processes.

In addition to discussing the new cabinet formation, the meeting also covered financial matters concerning the KRG. Both sides addressed the need to ensure the Kurdistan Region’s financial entitlements and the critical step of resuming oil exports, a significant economic lifeline for the region.

The discussions between Barzani and Hitchen underscore the international support for an inclusive government in the Kurdistan Region and reflect the KRG’s efforts to address regional and financial challenges while working closely with international partners.
