ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani met with French Ambassador to Iraq Patrick Durel in Pirmam on Monday to discuss bilateral relations.

During the meeting, the French Ambassador congratulated President Barzani and the Kurdistan Region on its recent successful parliamentary elections.

During the meeting, which was also attended by French Consul General to Erbil Yann Braem, Ambassador Durel commended the high voter turnout and peaceful democratic atmosphere during the Kurdistan Parliament elections held last October.

The ambassador expressed particular appreciation for the significant civic participation demonstrated by the Region's citizens.

President Barzani emphasized that "the notable citizen participation and successful execution of the elections represent a strong endorsement of the Region's legitimacy and institutions."

He also expressed gratitude to the international community and various parties for their role in monitoring the electoral process.

The meeting covered several key topics, including an assessment of the political situation in Iraq and the broader region, as well as relations between Erbil and Baghdad.

Both parties reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between the Kurdish and French peoples.

According to the official statement from Barzani Headquarters, the French Ambassador also thanked President Barzani for his support of the upcoming centenary commemoration ceremony for Madame Danielle Mitterrand, scheduled to take place in Erbil on Nov. 12, 2024.

Danielle Mitterrand, the late former First Lady of France, was known as a steadfast advocate for Kurdish rights and humanitarian causes. She played a crucial role in supporting the Kurdish people during critical periods, particularly following the 1991 Gulf War.

The Kurdistan Region and France have maintained strong diplomatic and cultural ties, with France consistently supporting Kurdish democratic initiatives and humanitarian efforts in the region.
