ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Erbil Traffic Directorate announced on Saturday a significant reduction in traffic accidents this year compared to previous years, attributing the improvement to heightened public awareness and the successful implementation of strategic plans.

In its statement, the Directorate emphasized that compliance with traffic laws remains crucial for maintaining this positive trend, urging drivers to adhere to safety guidelines for their own protection and that of others.

The Directorate identified key causes of accidents, including speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, and distracted driving—particularly the widespread use of mobile phones and social media. The statement highlighted the growing prevalence of such behaviors among young drivers, drawing parallels to similar challenges faced in countries like China.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), especially under the leadership of the ninth cabinet, has prioritized traffic safety and infrastructure improvements. The Ministry of Interior has intensified efforts to reduce road casualties, focusing on both prevention and enforcement measures.

The Erbil Traffic Directorate outlined its specific initiatives, which include continuous street monitoring by officers, enhanced surveillance through road cameras, and strict penalties for violations. These measures have contributed to the noticeable decline in accidents this year, marking a significant achievement.

The Directorate reiterated its call for drivers to comply with traffic laws and regulations, stressing that collective responsibility is essential to sustain these improvements.
