ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs announced in a statement that a tragic incident occurred on Sunday morning when an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted a convoy carrying officers from joint Peshmerga and Iraqi Army forces near Khurmatu.
The explosion took place at 09:00 AM on Sunday, during a wide-scale joint security sweep operation in the area.
According to the ministry's statement, the blast claimed the lives of three officers:
- Colonel Saman Sabir Sliman, Battalion Commander
- Colonel Mohammad Reza Karim, Engineering Officer of the Iraqi Army's 9th Division
- First Sergeant Sharif Ahmed Mohammad Amin
Additionally, three soldiers were wounded in the attack.
"During this sorrowful occasion, we extend our deepest condolences to ourselves and to the families, friends, and fellow soldiers of the martyrs," the ministry stated.
"We pray to Almighty God to grant patience and solace to us and their families," the statement added.
The area around Khurmatu, located in the Kurdistani territories outside KRG control, has continuously been a target for militant activities, particularly ISIS remnants. Joint operations between Peshmerga and Iraqi Army forces are regularly conducted to maintain security in these sensitive areas.
These operations have been crucial in preventing the resurgence of terrorist groups, though they continue to face risks from IEDs and other explosive devices left behind by militants.
