ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Russia's UN ambassador Vasily Nebenzya expressed great appreciation for Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani's cabinet's steps toward stabilizing domestic political conditions and improving the efficiency of government institutions at both provincial and local levels.

He cited the successful parliamentary elections held on Oct. 20, 2024, in the “Kurdistan Region and the election of the new Speaker of Parliament as evidence of this progress.”

The Russian representative stated that they hope all Iraqi political forces will work to resolve differences through dialogue, taking into account the interests of all components and residents.

Nebenzya reaffirmed his country's support for Erbil and Baghdad, saying, "Our support remains constant and unwavering for advancing dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad on all remaining disputed and unresolved issues."

Russia's UN Representative also noted, "We want to point out the positive trend in strengthening security and counter-terrorism efforts. We are confident that Iraq's security institutions can resolve these issues."

Nebenzya further emphasized that the implementation of agreements regarding the phased withdrawal of the International Coalition against ISIS led by the US from Iraq should be carried out on schedule.

He added that delays in this process and the presence of foreign forces on Iraqi soil “is not only a destabilizing factor for Iraq but also has an increasingly negative impact on the regional situation.”

He stated, "We observe the UN's various efforts in Iraq, including the activities of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). Over the past 20 years, it has dedicated its full capacity to restoring and strengthening the Iraqi state, including through normalizing social and political life and organizing electoral processes. Now, Iraqis are ready to take responsibility for their country's political future."

These statements were made by Vasily Nebenzya during his country's address at the United Nations meeting on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024.
