ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The 11th International Erbil Marathon took place on Friday with hundreds of local and international participants joining the event.

Abdulsattar Younis, head of the Erbil Marathon Organization, told Kurdistan24 that dozens of athletes, enthusiasts, and Iraqi champions from several cities registered for the marathon event.

One of the main intentions of this marathon is to raise awareness about preserving a clean environment in the city of Erbil.

With the supervision of 50 referees, 500 participants competed in the 21-kilometer race that took place around Sami Abdulrahman Park.

The top five finishers will receive cash prizes, while other participants will be awarded medals.

The Erbil International Marathon normally takes place at the end of November each year, attracting thousands of local and international runners.

This year's event was delayed to December because of the Kurdistan Region's elections. The marathon has become an important sporting event in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, encouraging both athletic activity and environmental awareness.
