Acting Halabja Governor Hails “Historic Day” as City Officially Becomes Iraq’s Newest Province
Speaking at a press conference shortly after the vote, Governor Nasih expressed deep gratitude to those who supported the move.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Acting Halabja Governor Nuxsha Nasih on Monday described the Iraqi Parliament’s approval of Halabja’s provincial status as a “historic day” for the people of the city, marking a major milestone in the region’s long quest for official recognition.
Speaking at a press conference shortly after the vote, Nasih expressed deep gratitude to those who supported the move. “Today is a historic day for the people of Halabja,” she said. “We thank all those who played a role in it, and we thank the President and Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region.”
She emphasized that the achievement was made possible by a rare show of political unity among Kurdish factions. “The unified position of the political parties was the result of Halabja receiving provincial status,” she stated.
Governor Nasih also used the occasion to urge continued cooperation among political leaders, not just for Halabja, but for the Kurdish people as a whole. “We hope that the political parties will take a unified position to achieve all the rights of the Kurdish people,” she added.
The Iraqi Parliament’s decision, passed with a clear majority, officially elevates Halabja to the status of a province, fulfilling a long-standing demand from its residents.
