ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Monday welcomed the Iraqi Parliament’s official recognition of Halabja as a province, calling it a historic and joyous achievement for the people of Halabja and the entire Kurdistan Region.
In a statement, President Barzani extended his heartfelt congratulations and praised all those in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region who contributed to the long-awaited decision.
“I extend my sincere congratulations to the people of Halabja and the Kurdistan Region on the Iraqi Parliament’s decision to grant Halabja provincial status,” Barzani said. “This milestone brings us great joy, reflecting the collective happiness of the people of Kurdistan.”
Barzani noted that efforts to secure Halabja’s provincial status began early under the Kurdistan Region’s leadership, aiming to enhance services and improve the quality of life for its people. “The successful completion of the necessary procedures in Iraq and its official recognition as a province acknowledge the sacrifices and hardships endured by Halabja and its resilient people,” he said.
Looking ahead, the President voiced hope that this recognition would pave the way for improvements in infrastructure, welfare, and development. “It is our collective duty to serve Halabja with unwavering commitment,” Barzani emphasized.
On this significant occasion, he also paid tribute to the victims of the 1988 chemical attack on Halabja and all martyrs of Kurdistan, saying, “We honor the martyrs of Halabja and all of Kurdistan, sending our heartfelt respects to their souls.”
Halabja’s elevation to full provincial status is widely seen as a symbol of resilience and a long-overdue recognition of its painful past and enduring spirit.
