ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani congratulated Friedrich Merz on Tuesday in a post on X, following his election as the new Chancellor of Germany.

“I’m confident your leadership will open new opportunities to strengthen the partnership between the Kurdistan Region and Germany,” the Prime Minister stated.

On Tuesday, Merz was elected as the next German chancellor after a second vote in parliament, succeeding following a historic defeat in the first round earlier that day.

Born on November 11, 1955, in Brilon, North Rhine-Westphalia, then part of West Germany, Merz became a member of the Young Union in 1972. After graduating from law school in 1985, he worked as a judge and corporate lawyer before transitioning to full-time politics in 1989 when he was elected to the European Parliament. Following one term, he was elected to the Bundestag, where he distinguished himself as the leading financial policy expert in the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). In 2000, he became chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, the same year Angela Merkel was elected chairwoman of the CDU. At that time, they were chief rivals for the party's leadership, which was in opposition alongside the CSU.
