PM Barzani, US Senator Slotkin Discuss Peshmerga Reforms and Kurdish Rights in Washington Meeting

The meeting highlighted ongoing reforms within the KRG, particularly efforts to modernize and unify the Ministry of the Peshmerga.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin in Washington on Wednesday to discuss key political and security issues, with a strong focus on reform and regional stability, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

The meeting highlighted ongoing reforms within the KRG, particularly efforts to modernize and unify the Ministry of the Peshmerga. Both parties stressed the importance of continued U.S. support for the Peshmerga forces, especially in the ongoing fight against terrorism.

Prime Minister Barzani and Senator Slotkin also discussed the importance of safeguarding the constitutional status of the Kurdistan Region within Iraq. They emphasized the need to secure the rights and financial entitlements of the Kurdish people and to promote peaceful coexistence and religious freedom across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq more broadly.

The meeting was part of Barzani’s broader visit to the United States aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and reinforcing the strategic partnership between the Kurdistan Region and the United States.
