ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Russia has issued a stark warning following Iran’s threat to shut down the strategic Strait of Hormuz, cautioning that any disruption to this key maritime chokepoint will trigger a severe global oil crisis, with the United States among the hardest-hit.

Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), stated on his X account that global oil prices are determined on an international scale, and if Tehran follows through with closing the strait, the U.S. will face “no mercy” when it comes to gasoline prices.

“No country will be shielded from the global oil shock,” Dmitriev wrote. “Gasoline prices will soar.”

Iran Threatens Retaliation After U.S. Strikes on Nuclear Sites

On Sunday, Iran officially threatened to shut down the Strait of Hormuz in response to American airstrikes that targeted three of its nuclear facilities—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—in a dramatic escalation of the already volatile conflict between the two nations.

The threat was reinforced by Ismail Kowsari, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, who told Iranian state media that the legislature sees a strategic necessity in blocking the waterway. However, he noted that the final decision must be approved by the country’s Supreme National Security Council.

Strait of Hormuz: Global Energy Lifeline

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital oil arteries, through which a significant portion of global energy supplies transit daily. Any disruption to this maritime corridor would not only rattle global energy markets but also pose grave risks to regional and international economic stability.

U.S. Strikes Devastate Iranian Nuclear Facilities

In a major show of military force, the U.S. carried out precision air raids early Sunday targeting Iran’s major nuclear infrastructure. According to U.S. and satellite assessments, the strikes inflicted “monumental” damage on all three targeted facilities.

The Pentagon and U.S. officials have framed the strikes as necessary to eliminate Iran’s nuclear threat, while Iranian leaders vowed revenge and warned of broader regional consequences.

As diplomatic tensions deepen, and threats of escalation loom, international observers are closely watching whether Tehran will make good on its vow to block the Strait of Hormuz—a move that could ignite a global economic crisis.
