ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Russian President Vladimir Putin met on Wednesday in Moscow with Steve Witkoff, U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, for high-level talks just days before Washington’s deadline for Russia to agree to a peace deal in Ukraine, the Kremlin confirmed.
The closed-door meeting, which lasted about three hours, comes amid renewed U.S. threats of severe economic penalties — including potential tariffs on countries that continue to import Russian oil — if Moscow fails to halt its military campaign in Ukraine.

The meeting follows intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian areas, as well as growing frustration from Trump over the Kremlin's refusal to de-escalate the war. Trump has said a final decision on punitive tariffs will be made by the end of the week.
