ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Work on the critical Gomaspan-Smaquli dual carriageway is continuing with the highest quality and standards, with the project now expected to be completed by the end of November this year, the Erbil Governorate has announced. The major infrastructure project is set to provide a modern, high-speed link between the provinces of Erbil and Sulaimani and is a key component of the region's economic and tourism development strategy.

In a statement, the Erbil Governorate disclosed that the 210 billion dinar project is being implemented by the "Hemin Group" company. The new road is part of the broader development plan for the Gomaspan Dam, which is envisioned as a strategic project for both tourism and economic growth. The governorate clarified that the project will connect the two major provinces and will also include the road network surrounding the dam.

The 22-kilometer-long carriageway will feature advanced engineering, including 6 underpasses and 3 overpasses, to ensure smooth and safe transit.

This project has been a priority for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Earlier this year, on May 12, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani conducted an on-site inspection of the project's progress, underscoring the government’s ongoing commitment to inter-provincial integration.

During that visit, Prime Minister Barzani praised the efforts of the engineers, workers, and management teams. He specifically commended the Hemn Group for its professional execution of the project according to approved specifications and engineering standards. "I thank the supervisors, engineers, and all the workers of Hemn Group for their commitment to quality and timely implementation," the Prime Minister stated during the site visit.

Accompanied by top KRG officials, the Prime Minister's inspection highlighted the project’s importance within the broader framework of the KRG’s infrastructure development agenda. The dual carriageway is part of a wider push to upgrade road networks across the region, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance safety standards for commuters.

By engaging directly with project teams, the Prime Minister has continued to position strategic infrastructure as a cornerstone of his administration’s economic vision.

Once operational, the route is expected to significantly improve travel efficiency, promote commerce, and contribute to regional economic integration. Due to its proximity to the Gomaspan Dam, the project also serves a vital logistical function in supporting surrounding infrastructure and water resource management.

As the Kurdistan Region continues to pursue long-term stability and sustainable growth, investments such as the Gomaspan-Smaquli project are viewed as crucial for laying the groundwork for deeper inter-provincial cooperation.
