KRG Invests Approximately $4 Billion in Major Road and Infrastructure Projects
The government is currently implementing a further 227 strategic infrastructure projects covering 2,239 kilometers of roads.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has launched a comprehensive reconstruction and development campaign to modernize the region’s road network and infrastructure, aiming to improve connectivity, ease traffic congestion, and support key economic sectors, including trade, industry, and tourism.
The KRG has allocated more than 5.3 trillion Iraqi dinars (approximately $4 billion) to expand and modernize major and external roads. The investment has resulted in 1,271 service and engineering projects, including the construction and paving of 5,940 kilometers of roads.
According to official data from the KRG Department of Media and Information, 810 inter-city projects have been completed, involving the construction or rehabilitation of 3,055 kilometers of roads outside major urban areas. More than 2,248 road and bridge projects have also been completed within cities to improve traffic flow and urban infrastructure.

The campaign has also focused on road safety, with 2,723 kilometers of road markings completed, along with the installation of 19,342 traffic signs, 62 kilometers of guardrails, and 59 pedestrian overpasses.
In parallel with external road development, the KRG has carried out thousands of urban infrastructure projects across the region’s provinces and independent administrations, including improvements to drinking water and sewage networks.
The construction of major roads, bridges, and modern overpasses in urban centers has helped ease congestion and improve traffic movement while contributing to the modernization of cities and creating a more suitable living environment for residents.
The expanded transport network is also expected to strengthen commercial and tourism activity by facilitating the movement of goods and travelers between different parts of the Kurdistan Region.
The KRG says the infrastructure drive is intended to strengthen connectivity across the region while creating a stronger foundation for sustainable economic growth.
