Nechirvan Barzani: Removing Syria From Terrorism List Is an Important Step

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday welcomed the US decision to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, describing the move as an important step toward stability, international engagement and a new future for the country.

On Tuesday, Nechirvan Barzani welcomed the US administration’s decision to remove the Syrian Arab Republic from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Barzani said the decision was an important step in supporting Syria’s recovery, stability and prosperity, while creating a new opportunity for the country to resume its natural role in the region and the world.

He expressed hope that the decision would contribute to building a peaceful future in which the rights of Syria’s diverse communities are fully protected.

Barzani also said the US decision would broaden prospects for developing Syria’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, with the aim of expanding cooperation across different fields in a way that serves the region’s shared interests.

Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi also welcomed Syria’s removal from the list of countries that support terrorism.

In a statement on Tuesday, Abdi said the decision represented an important step toward restoring and strengthening Syria’s international relations and opening the way for a new phase of stability, development and work toward the country’s future.

He also described the decision as an achievement in fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people for security, peace and development.

Syria’s President Ahmad al-Sharaa and senior government officials also welcomed Washington’s decision, describing it as a historic opportunity to end years of international isolation and support the country’s economic recovery.

The United States’ decision to revoke Syria’s designation as a terrorist state represents a recalibration of Washington’s policy toward the new leadership in Damascus.

Previously, this designation had severely curtailed Syria's integration into global financial systems and was a hallmark of the punitive measures against the former Assad regime.

For the incoming administration led by al-Sharaa, this move is likely to facilitate broader diplomatic normalization, ease access to international capital, and provide much-needed momentum for rebuilding a war-shattered economy.
